Tear down workshop: useITsmartly at CMD in A’dam

Last week 11 CMD students at the applied university of Amsterdam joined in a tear down workshop in collaboration with useITsmartly. First they tore down different IT devices and household appliances to subsequently incorporate the pieces into a collage. Then using future narratives and life cycle diagramming to start a campaign with which they made their peers aware of the consequences  for the environment when using IT. The amazing results of this week; campaigns, videos and photos can be seen on the website of useITsmartly, Facebook, YouTube and twitter #‎useITsmartly‬.
Have fun watching!

UseITSmartly “is a current project funded by IEE (‘Intelligent Energy – Europe’) aiming at capacity building towards behavioural changes in the way youths use technology. The project wants to close this gap by developing innovative solutions for capacity building in young people towards smart IT use and ideas on how to reach them with this topic.” (www.useITsmartly.com) The Dutch representation of useITsmartly is Duneworks from Eindhoven.

> U verwerft inzicht in de diverse gebruikersonderzoek methoden.
> U leert gebruikersgegevens te analyseren en te vertalen naar een mentaal model/affinity diagram, flowmodel en persona’s.
> U bouwt een informatie architectuur op welke voldoet aan de verwachting van uw gebruikers.
> U leert ontwerpbeslissingen te nemen op basis van de resultaten van het onderzoek (evidence-based design) en interface theorieën (gestalt principes en usability regels).

New workshop: Qualitative Interviewing

Interviewing people about their work and live leads to insights about the structure of their work or live. These insights can be directly translated into services and products that closely match the requirements of what people want or need. From the interview we want to know how people are organized and whether they do things in the same way as another person. How people divide their work and live into activities, goals, different strategies and individual steps. At an early stage in the research or development project many details will become clear about the structure of work or live that might show several issues (in context) on any kind of subject.
Interviews within qualitative research are  semi-structured and have a student-master approach; the interviewer is the student and the interviewee the master. The ultimate goal is to get the best out of the interviews through techniques such as asking the right kind of questions, observing and listening skills and to gain insights from the story people tell.

> The goal of this workshop is to get the best out of interview techniques such as composing and asking questions, observing and listening. And to acquire insights from the stories that people tell.

> The different phases are:
– Prepare an interview
– Determine roles
– The choice of participants
– Questions, composing and asking
– Listening
– Body language
– Observations
– Interviewing
– Most common mistakes during interviewing
